Quality Hawai'iana full length hostess or formal gown in vivid colors by Ui Makai, unmistakably true vintage. Column styling is the height of elegance (think Audrey Hepburn), with a high fitted empire waistline adding to the slimming graceful effect. All the drama is in the back, with a modified short train effect called a "watteau" (two box pleats in the back which fan out when you walk), a feature of formal dress popular from the late '50's & into the '60's.
It's a remarkable dress, made of high quality cotton "barkcloth" (a special weave), featuring a stunning vivid representation of local flora ~ hibiscus & plumeria ~ in a Mod vertical design with plenty of white space to lend it a graphic look. The maker, Ui Makai, is rather elusive history-wise, but by the label (Diamond Head in the background), we surmise that they were located on Oahu. Further research into the distinctive fabric itself tells us it was in production only 3 years, between 1963-1966.
Suggested modern size Small (U.S. 4-6) ~ as always with vintage, go by actual measurements~ Bust: 32"+ (darted) Fitted Empire Waist: 28 Hips: Free Length: 51"
Condition Details: True vintage in excellent condition; sewn-in cloth label; nylon back zipper . We've hand washed in cold water, steamed & lightly pressed it. Nicely made of 100% heavy cotton which our research shows to be known as Polynesian Textiles D/#10878. Minor issues are minimal wear to the hem underside & a very small dot of color bleed in back near shoulder, not very noticeable (see last detail photo).
